Happy Halloween!! October 31, 2011

Filed under: Uncategorized — theluces @ 11:37 am

I hope you all are having a fabulous Halloween!! The girls were super excited to get their costumes on IMMEDIATELY this morning. Sophie was having her usual costume parade at school, and Emma’s school hadn’t said anything about the kids wearing theirs, so I just risked it and she was fine to wear it (but may have been the only kid in her class actually IN costume). For some reason, I can’t get a picture of them that isn’t slightly blurry.

I’m not sure if Sophie was more excited about the costume or the fact that she had on black “lipstick”, either way, she was really happy about today.

Today I did Week 1 Day 1 of the C25K program (couch to 5 k). It’s only 31 minutes and starts with a warm up walk, followed by intervals of running and walking, and then a cool down walk. In theory it is very simple, and you don’t even run all that much to start out. In reality, it kicked my ass. Or I should say my lungs. My legs can handle it, but my lungs feel like they are going to explode. I need to be working on my deep breathing to get my lungs back in shape … they really let me down today.

I also made a fantastic addition to my smoothies today. I’ve been trying to figure out what else I can add to them, but not yogurt, or more fruit. I would like protein, but not protein powder. Not soy, because I don’t want the extra estrogen. And wah-lah!! I happened to see it on Pinterest last night and added it today and I LOVE IT!! Wait for it … OATMEAL!! I pulsed mine in the blender first to make it into a powder, but it would just depend on how much texture you like. It’s very smooth this way. It adds a little bit of a nutty flavor and adds some protein and fiber, therefore my smoothie is more filling. It’s perfect!

Well, I suppose I better get a couple things done around here before I need to go get Emma (who I am to refer to as Minnie for the day, per her instructions). We have day 2 of music lessons today, the start of Tyler’s last week of cross country for his freshman year, and then home for some trick or treating!! Busy day, I better get moving 🙂

Have a spooktacular day!! ~ Jackie

Another weekend October 29, 2011

Filed under: Uncategorized — theluces @ 9:12 pm

I’m probably the only person around that doesn’t LOVE the weekend, and here is another one upon us. Actually, they haven’t been too bad, and have gone by quickly. Today we had Tyler’s County XC meet, and luckily it was close to home, so I was able to go drop him off and the girls and I came back home until closer to his time to run. It was a chilly fall morning, and unfortunately very windy. FWB did awesome at the meet, sweeping first for all 4 divisions, but due to the course being tougher and the wind, I don’t know if anyone got their Personal Record this week. Tyler ran a 19:20, so only 23 seconds from his, so he still did fantastic and even ended up coming in ahead of 2 of his teammates that he’s usually just behind. He only has 1 week left of XC for this year with Districts being next weekend, he is VERY determined to PR again next week. The girls kept busy, as always while he was running:

They might have picked all of the “flowers”, but they stayed very happily entertained.

FWBHS District Champs 2011!!

We also had birthday parties for the girls to go to last night and this afternoon, so the girls have had a couple very busy days full of playing and running around. They should sleep very well tonight!

Time for Mama to crash too 🙂 ~ Jackie

Pumpkin Patch Field Trip October 27, 2011

Filed under: Uncategorized — theluces @ 10:23 pm

Emma had a field trip today to the pumpkin patch. By “pumpkin patch”, I don’t mean a real, out on the farm, patch of pumpkins. It is actually all set up at one of the churches in town, so all of the pumpkins are brought in and set all over on pallets. They have games set up for the kids to play, they have a hay ride (which the driver was absolutely crazy and I’m pretty sure every adult and some of the kids ended up motion sick), story time, and a tiny snack at the end.

I asked Emma if she would like for me to go on her field trip with her. She promptly responded, “No, I want to ride with my friends.” She has no regard for my feelings whatsoever. We did compromise that I would meet her there, which I needed to anyway because Tyler had an orthodontist appointment this morning too. Thankfully, she didn’t totally blow me off when we all got there.

She had a great time.

The kids and I went back after picking Tyler up from practice and got them all pumpkins that we will paint, maybe tomorrow night. There are certain things that I leave to Brian to do, and carving pumpkins is one of those things. I’m sure I could do it, but I don’t have the patience for the huge mess right now. So, we are going to paint them instead. Everyone is excited about that.

Now, tomorrow is already Friday again. We have a busy Friday and Saturday planned, and may go to the outlet mall on Sunday. I’ve been missing Brian like crazy this week, and should be, he’s officially been gone just over a month now. I know the time is not going nearly as quickly for him.

I hope you all have a fun Halloween weekend planned!! ~ Jackie

Emma’s wisdom and an end October 25, 2011

Filed under: Uncategorized — theluces @ 6:56 pm

As I sit here, with my afternoon cup of (decaf) coffee (I know, it really doesn’t give me an actual boost to get me through, but mentally, it’s nice), Emma told me, “Mom. Remember that cockroach that I had you get? That’s why we don’t eat in the living room. That’s why we eat in YOUR room.” Interesting rationale. She’s quite a thinker, that one!

Also, it is a sentimental day for me. Our tenants are moving into our AL house today. We have a purchase agreement, so hopefully before too long, they will be the owners and we won’t. But, we love that house.

It was where we celebrated Sophie’s first Christmas and all of our first Christmas’s from home.

And our second Christmas away.

We brought Emma home to this house.

We celebrated Emma’s first Christmas there too.

While I am SUPER ready for the bills to go away, I will be sad to never walk through there again. We had so many great memories, grew our family … I will always hold those memories close to my heart (and on cds full of pictures). I hope the new family loves the house as much as we have.

Happy Tuesday y’all! ~ Jackie

First lessons and Daddy reads a book October 24, 2011

Filed under: Uncategorized — theluces @ 6:13 pm

Yay! Today the girls had their first music lessons! It was a bit of a race, as Tyler had practice start at 1, the girls needed naps, and I had to have them to lessons at 4, pick Tyler back up between 4 & 4:15. So, I dropped two very excited girls off with their instructors and headed back to the high school to get Tyler. Then I headed back to pick up the girls from lessons WITHOUT Tyler, because they weren’t back yet. Emma was just finished when I got there and Mr. Mike, her instructor, said she needed to go to the bathroom pretty badly. After that situation was under control, he told me that she did really good and that she has a surprisingly good sense of time (woo hoo!!).

Then Sophie finished up, also with a great review, and REALLY liked it. It was a very good first week.

I then rushed back to the high school to get Tyler, assuming that he’d now been waiting for a good 20 minutes. He wasn’t even there yet. They were over a 1/2 hour late and I got all stressed for nothing. We had already decided we were going to get some Bippy’s Frozen Yogurt after lessons and practice, so we headed back AGAIN. Tyler made a mad dash to the 5 Guys bathroom and threw up … he hasn’t been feeling that well. I might have to break down and take him to the doctor.

Now we are back home, and the girls got to watch the first book that their Daddy has sent them on this deployment.

He read them Amelia Bedilia. As always, Emma tried to talk to him, “Daddy! Hi Daddy! Daddy!?” Sophie read along with him. I just get teary.

I hope you all are having a great Monday! ~ Jackie

PS: While most people don’t wear shoes in the house, Emma considers our house her no pants zone.

It’s a better day October 23, 2011

Filed under: Uncategorized — theluces @ 9:33 am

So, despite the early to mid part of my day yesterday sucking, it ended up being a good day. Tyler is not mad at me, and knows what he needs to do 1: to get his xbox back and 2: what is expected of him (not that he didn’t already know … but sometimes these things need to be reiterated). He’s back to normal, my wonderful, considerate young man.

I made some soup yesterday that I LOVE and haven’t made in the longest time. It’s healthy, super easy, and is ready in a matter of minutes.

Yummy Salsa and Black Bean Soup with a dollop of sour cream on top. All it is, is 1 cup of salsa, 2 cans black beans (drained and rinsed), and 2 cups of chicken (or vegetable) broth. You heat the salsa, add the beans and broth. Bring to a boil and simmer for 15 minutes. Then put 1/2 of the soup (cooled a bit) into a blender or food processor, then add back. Done. You could put some tortilla chips and shredded cheese on it too if you want. But it’s awesome, and good for you, and SO easy. I don’t know why I haven’t made this in years. It’s back on rotation.

Like I said, we ended up having a good day. The girls kept pretty busy playing me songs on the piano, made lots of pictures, had good naps. Tyler stayed overnight with one of his friends so the girls and I watched Rango. They thought it was great, a few creepy parts, but they both sat, snuggled up with me, through the whole thing.

Then it was bedtime.

We were up til 9:00 watching the movie, so Emma was out in a matter of minutes. I guess Piggy, Elisabeth, and Bailey help her sleep really well 🙂

Well, my yummy steel cut oats are ready, so time for some breakfast and then some Sunday yoga then grocery shopping. We have a playdate later with one of Emma’s buddies from school. It’s supposed to be in the mid 70s today … should be very nice.

I hope y’all have a great Sunday! ~ Jackie

Today sucks October 22, 2011

Filed under: Uncategorized — theluces @ 12:58 pm

Today is one of those parenting days that just plain SUCKS.

I check Tyler’s grades very regularly. He has even written in a paper about his family, that one quote that sticks in his head that his parent’s say is “don’t put yourself in a situation where you have to dig yourself out of a hole”. So, I try to be very proactive about his grades. We have to much information right at our fingertips, on a daily basis, to not be. Tyler does well in school, and in just finishing up his first 9 weeks as a high school freshman while running cross country, and making the huge schedule change to an average of 12 hours days (from wake up to get home from school and practice) … he’s doing VERY well. But I don’t tolerate slacking. We have had the same conversation MANY times about studying for tests. You just do it. You don’t drop the ball on the biggest percentage of your grade. After the last conversation, he was warned that his Xbox would be taken away for the rest of the semester if he did it again.

Now he’s very angry at me. Because I had to follow through on my word or it means nothing. And I hate it. He probably hates me right now, and that’s ok, because it was ultimately his choice to do the right thing in the first place. And I know, that after he gets done being mad at me, he will realize he really is more mad at him. I hate this part of parenting, especially when I’m doing it by myself while my better half is 1/2 way around the world fighting much bigger battles than the latest Biology test. I miss him like crazy.

Hope you are all having a MUCH better Saturday than me 🙂 ~ Jackie
